First performed by Freddie Frinton in Blackpool in 1945, this extraordinary cult sketch with May Warden as Miss Sophie and Freddie (in real life, tea total) as James, the Butler, can trace its lineage through the Music Halls. It has enjoyed far greater worldwide prominence, however, during the past quarter of a century, shown each New Years’ Eve on German, Finnish, Danish and Australian television, Norwegian tv shows it each 23rd December. It has become so famous, as with The Rocky Horror Show, viewers join in the dialogue. As for British television…the same procedure every year…Not for us: one of Britain’s greatest-ever sketches is rarely, if ever, shown.
