Comedians are known to frequently use swear words. Is it really necessary, what do you think?

I don`t find it offensive if the odd swear word is said, it can be funny. Using swear words constantly then no, there is no need for it x

no the occasional appropriate word is ok, but swearing to try to look big or clever isn't funny.

With such a huge vocabulary at the disposal of apparently intelligent and educated people, then no, it shouldn't be necessary...
However, the shock value of a darn good and well-placed expletive often makes us snigger like schoolkids & adds to the humorous experience.

Using swear words occasionally is OK, but not every second word.

swearing does not make a good comedian - it is uncalled for but you can let the odd one creep in

No I don't think they need to at all and those that swear loads just aren't funny. Although I don't have a problem with the odd well placed swear word.

No I don't think you need to swear to be funny, it depends on your act. Harry Hill is very funny and doen't swear. However Bill Hicks swore alot and he was excellent.

Poor comedians RELY on swearing ..great ones rely on humour.

I think there is never a need to swear just to get laughs. I would much rather go and see a comedian who was funny without the need to swear.

Sometimes swearing is appropriate and funny especially when the joke is built round an experience, in these cases realistic swearing enhances the stuation. However most standard jokes work just as well without swearing. I have to say it does not bother me either way.

Depends on the act - some acts work well with swear words thrown in - others go over the top though...

Definitely not - if you have true talent you don't need to swear.

I don't think swearing itself is funny, but I think sometimes a swear word can add the right emphasis needed to make something funnier.

Swearing is certainly not compulsory for comedy but it's not a problem and a comedian should always be a little risque!

I don't think it's neccassary for comedians to swear however explecitives can emphasise emotions and feelings to exagerate humour. Billy connolly heavily relies on swear words and this adds to his perfomance,
